VHSL Physical Required. In order to be able to practice, you must have a current VHSL Sports Physical on file at the School Board Office. If you have participated in a fall sport, you have already met this requirement. If you did not participate in a fall sport, you need to ensure that you get a sports physical done and turn it in to the County Nurse, Pam Unhoch, at the School Board Office. Physicals done for sports in the 2019-2020 school year do not count; the physical must have been done after June 1, 2020.
Pay to Participate Fee $50. Since this is an official winter sport, you will be required to pay the $50 Pay to Participate Fee no later than December 22, 2020. This fee can be paid directly to the bookkeeper, Mrs. Eaton, or paid online through MySchoolBucks; it should not be given to the coaches.
Events. Indoor Track & Field in Virginia has the following events:
Sprints: 55m Dash, 300m Dash, 500m Dash, 4 x 200m Relay, 4 x 400m Relay
Practice Schedule. Practice will be from 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. on the following days except the first week will be Monday, Nov 2, Wednesday, Nov 4, and Thursday, Nov 5:
Distance - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
Jumps - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
Sprints & Hurdles - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
Throws - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
Athletes are expected to attend ALL PRACTICES FOR THEIR EVENT AREA IN ORDER TO COMPETE.
Changing for Practice. You will be issued lockers and locks down in the Field House, and you will change down there every day for practice. The Field House will not be unlocked during the day (no one will be down there).
Outside Practices. We will be practicing outside. You will need to dress appropriately every day. Check the weather report before you pack your bag each day to see what the temperature will be, then ensure you have packed adequate clothes for the temperatures. Wear plenty of layers, including head covering and gloves, when the temperatures drop below 50 degrees. You may be able to remove some layers during your workout, but you need to be prepared to put them back on when done with your workout. If an athlete’s event area coach determines an athlete is under-dressed for the weather, that athlete will be sent home, and it will count as a missed practice for discipline purposes. It’s better to over-dress and be able to take layers off than to under-dress and miss a practice.
Each event area coach will determine whether or not he/she will hold practice that day based on the temperature, conditions, and what can be accomplished at practice that day. Any cancellations will be announced prior to school letting out and athletes & parents will be notified if practice is canceled using a Remind text message. It will also be announced on afternoon announcements. If there is snow on the track/circles/ runways, practice will be limited to running in the main building, strength & core conditioning. Practice may be shortened on those days; that call will be made that day, and athletes will be notified and given the opportunity to notify rides of any changes in plans.
Remind group. All athletes and their parents are required to join the James Wood High School Track & Field Remind group to receive texts relating to the team, practice, meets, etc., by texting @JWHSTF to 81010.
You can also create an account at www.remind.com using your e-mail address, join the Remind group, and receive these same messages to your e-mail inbox. You can even do both so you get both texts and e-mails.
This Remind group will also be used for Outdoor Track & Field.

Sponsorships & Donations. Instead of trying to do fundraisers, we want to try to get businesses and/or individuals to sponsor the team. We would use the money to offset some of the cost of (or, hopefully, pay for) team t-shirts (and possibly even sweatshirts if we raise enough). If you own (or know someone who owns) a business and would like to be a sponsor (minimum of $150), we’ll put your business logo, phone number, Web address, etc., on the back of our shirts. An individual can donate ($100 or more) for the same recognition. Any dollar amount will be accepted and appreciated. Contact Coach Abeeb if interested in sponsoring and/or donating.
