Frederick County Parks and Recreation has worked with high school athletic directors and coaches to offer programs for athletes impacted by the delayed start to VHSL sports this year. Cross country coaches met with Parks staff to expand on its successful youth running club so that high school and middle school runners could continue their training while offering several weekday races. James Wood has had the highest registration among the four local training locations with 38 runners. Additionally, the Kernstown Battlefield Association is offering a 4-race series that should provide higher-level competition for top area runners.
Parks is currently accepting registration for the yearly fall wooden bat baseball league and is now offering a fast-pitch softball league. These opportunities may be excellent opportunities to add to club or travel play, or for players who may not be able to devote the time or financial resources to those programs. Parks is also in the process of considering programs for other team sports and additions will be posted here, as well as on the FCPRD website where students can register.
