The James Wood Lady Soccer Colonels won their second game of the season with a 3-0 victory over Millbrook. Maddy Milburn opened the second half with a goal from the top of the box off a cross from Olivia Walker. 9 minutes later Sidney Rathel hit the first of her two goals after receiving a short pass from McKenna Newcome. Later, with 5 minutes left in the game, Sidney scored again off a cross from Abby Ensogna. The strong Colonel defense held for the shutout. Sadie Kerns had 4 saves in the game, one coming in a late push from the Pioneers. The Lady Colonels are 2-0 and host Sherando on Thursday. The JV girls' team fell to the Pioneers, 3-1.
James Wood beat Millbrook 11-3 in varsity softball Tuesday night. Jenna Burkhamer started on the mound and threw 3 innings with 6 K's allowing only 2 runs on 2 hits. Cadence Rieg threw the last 4 innings with 6 K's also only allowing 2 hits. Leading the Colonels at the plate was Caity Shutts 3-4 with 2 doubles and 2 rbi's, Olivia Miller 2-2 double, and Laken Whipkey 2-2 with 2 rbi's. Jenna Burkhamer hit a 2-run HR and Cadence Rieg added a 3-run HR. Syd Orndorff was 2-4 with a double and Ellie Johnson was 1-2 with an RBI. The Colonels travel to Sherando on Thursday.
The boys' tennis team got back on the winning track Tuesday with a 6-3 team win over Millbrook. Singles winners for Wood were Saeed Turner, Jonah Borromeo, Ryan Stevens, Caedmon Reams, and Scott Shepherd. Shepherd and Reams combined for a win in doubles play. The Colonels travel to Sherando on Thursday.
The girls' tennis team fell to Millbrook 8-1 with Bianca Linares winning her singles match (8-2). The team will host the Warriors on Thursday.
The Colonels baseball team came up short in a 3-1 loss against Millbrook on Tuesday night. Nick Bell went 5 innings on the mound, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits with 4 K’s. Colin McGuire kept the Pioneers scoreless over the final 2 innings. Offensively, the Colonels lone run came by way of a Kaden Spaid home run. Luke Gross, Bodie Pullen, Aden Payne, and Andrew Waters all collected 1 hit a piece. The Colonels loaded the bases in the bottom of the 7th but could not push any runs across. The team will travel to Sherando on Thursday night with game time at 6:00 PM. The JV baseball team was victorious with an 11-3 road win at Millbrook.
