The James Wood girls' soccer team defeated Millbrook 2-0 in the opening round of the District tournament Tuesday night. Maddy Milburn opened the scoring 65 minutes into the game assisted by Grace Hawkins. Sidney Rathel put one in 10 minutes later after receiving a brilliant ball from McKenna Newcome. The defense led by Annalee Woodson posted another shutout. Goalkeeper Sadie Kerns recorded 3 saves in the win. The Lady Colonels take on Fauquier Thursday night at 8:00.
The boys' soccer team handily defeated Handley 8-0 in the early game. Chris Garcia set a new school record of 48 career goals by scoring three goals in the win. The boys will host Culpeper on Thursday at 6:00.
The baseball team overcame a 4-1 deficit by scoring three runs in the 5th and 6 in the 6th to earn the 10-4 win. Nick Bell earned the win in relief going 4 innings, allowing no runs, no hits, and striking out two. Aden Payne led Wood at the plate going 3-3 with a double, one run, two RBI, a walk, and two stolen bases. Bodie Pullen and Brody Bower were both 2-4, and Kaden Spaid had 2 walks, 3 runs, and 3 stolen bases. Baseball travels to Kettle Run on Thursday with game time at 6:00.
Softball earned a berth in the semifinals after Handley forfeited the game due to lack of enough players. Softball will host Kettle Run on Thursday at 6:00 PM at Stonewall Park.
