The James Wood girls' soccer team continued its season with an 11-0 win over Fauquier in the Northwestern District semifinals on Thursday night. The win advances them to the championship round against either Kettle Run or Handley and clinches a regional birth. Sidney Rathel scored four goals, Olivia Walker, and Ella Myers had two each, Captain Katelyn Mounts, McKenna Newcome, and Kelsey Gass each scored one goal. Newcome contributed three assists. Maddy Milburn assisted on two goals as did Walker. Lydia Watson, Sidney Rathel, Brooke Geary, and Madeline Heustis each had an assist. Julia Watts led the defense in its 9th shutout. Sadie Kerns had 3 saves in the victory. The girls will host Handley, which beat Kettle Run on Friday, in the championship match on Tuesday at 5:30 PM.
The boys' team improved to 12-0 on the season with a 3-1 win over Culpeper in their semifinal on Thursday. Leading the Colonels was Seth Hammond with a goal and one assist, Hayden Armstrong and Efrain Cruz also had goals. Tristan Obert and Edgar Del Moral had assists. Shots were 17-3 in favor of Wood with Brandon Dunn making 2 saves. The Colonels will host either Kettle Run or Millbrook in the final next Tuesday, and advance to the region tournament for the second time in school history. The 12 wins sets a new school record for most team wins in a season. The boys will host Millbrook, a 1-0 winner over Kettle Run on Friday, at 7:30 for the championship.
The softball team overcame a 4-0 deficit by scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth to beat Kettle Run, 6-4. The Colonels gave up three runs in the first inning and one in the second, but shut the door the rest of the way to earn a spot in the championship game. Rieg threw a complete game with 12 strikeouts. After allowing the 4 runs in the first two innings, Rieg settled in and was lights out allowing only 4 singles and 1 walk the rest of the way. The Colonels completed the comeback with a 5 run 6th inning to take the lead highlighted by Izzy Mckee's 2 RBI double, Caity Shutts' RBI double, and Skyla Compton's pinch hit RBI single. The team will travel to #1 seed Fauquier on Tuesday with game time at 6:00 PM.
The baseball team defeated Kettle Run 5-2 on the road to advance to the final. The Colonels were led by Jacob Roy who was 3-4 with a run and stolen base. Luke Gross was 2-3 with a double, RBI, and stolen base. Wood will travel to Millbrook on Tuesday for the Championship at 6:00 PM.
