The James Wood girls' soccer team won the Northwestern District tournament title for the first time in the program's history. The Lady Colonels posted a 2-1 victory over Handley Tuesday night, beating the Judges for the third straight match this season Freshman McKenna Newcome and Kelsey Gass both had big goals to answer Handley’s opening goal 14 minutes into the game. Annalee Woodson and Olivia Walker had the assists. Goalkeeper Sadie Kerns had 5 big saves in the title victory. The Colonels will host Loudoun County, the 2nd seed from the Dulles District, next Monday with game time at 5:30 PM.
The James Wood boys' soccer brought home their second Northwestern District title in program history with a 2-0 win over Millbrook. Leading the Colonels was Seth Hammond and Tristan Obert with goals and Ryan King with an assist. Brandon Dunn had 3 saves and the backline of King, Frigaard, Barton, and Bowman, had their 11th shutout on the season. The Colonels are 13-0 and will host a regional semifinal on Monday, also against Loudoun County, with start time at 7:30 PM.
The baseball team racked up a 9-0 lead early in the championship game at Millbrook and held on for a 9-4 win. Kaden Spaid earned the win and improved to 7-0 on the season, lasting 3.1 innings, allowing 3 H, 4R, 1 ER, 5 K’s. Nick Bell in relief went 3.2 inn, 0 R, 2 K.
Wood’s hot bats were led by Luke Gross 2-4, 2B, R, 3 RBI, SB. Jacob Roy 2-3, 2B, R. Colin McGuire 2-4, 2B, R, RBI. Brody Bower 2-4, R. Jayden Nixon 1-2, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, SB. Bodie Pullen 1-4, 2 R, RBI, SB. Jaden Ashby 1-3, R. Wood will host a Region 4C semifinal on Monday against the #2 Dulles seed (Broad Run or Heritage) at R. Charles Hott Stadium with a tentative 6:00 PM start.
The softball team fell just short of making it a clean Colonels sweep, falling to Fauquier 1-0 on the road on Tuesday. Cadence Rieg was brilliant in the circle, throwing a complete game while allowing only 3 hits and finished with 5 strikeouts. Megan Harrington for Fauquier pitched a gem as well allowing only 2 hits and 1 walk while striking out 12. Sadie Kittoe was 1-3 with a triple and Caity Shutts was 1-2 with a walk. James Wood will be the #2 seed in its regional game next Monday at Tuscarora. Opening pitch is set for 6:00 PM.
