Makayla Firebaugh, who became the school's all-time leading scorer for girls' basketball during the 2019-20 season, had her jersey #23 retired in a pre-game ceremony on Tuesday as the Colonels hosted Fauquier.
Prior to Tuesday, only two jerseys had been retired in James Wood history: Michael Crawford, the all-time leading scorer in boys’ basketball, and legendary football coach Walter Barr who had honorary jersey #1 retired.
Makayla finished her James Wood career as the all-time leader in several categories, including scoring with 2031 total points, 189 three-pointers, most three- pointers in a season with 63, most points scored in a season with 612, most points scored in a game with 44, and top scoring average at 24.5 per game. She was a four-time recipient of the JWAA basketball MVP award, was the 2020 Northwestern District player of the year, was Co-Region 4C Player of the Year, and was 1st Team All-State in 4A.
In her rookie season at Ryder University in the MAAC Conference, Makayla was named co-rookie of the year, was named to the All-Rookie and All-Tournament team, was named player of the week once and rookie of the week twice. She started in 21 games, averaging 11 points and over 4 rebounds per game, including 40 three-pointers.
This season, Makayla was selected to the MAAC Pre-Season Second Team. She is currently averaging 11.7, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.7 steals per game, scoring a season-high 26 vs. Columbia. She is currently in the top two on Ryder’s team in points, assists, rebounds, steals, and free throw percentage.
The jersey will hang on the gym balcony near Michael Crawford’s, and will be relocated to the new athletic foyer which will be part of the school renovation scheduled to begin this coming summer.
