Despite several starters out of the lineup, the Colonels wrestling team defeated Skyline on Wednesday night at the Donald H. Shirley Gymnasium. The win came on Senior Night as Aaron Black (120), Bailey Eichelberger (170), and Matt Papastavrou (152) were recognized for their contributions to the program. The Colonels will compete in the John Champe Tournament this Saturday in their last regular season match. The Conference 21 West Championships will be held on Saturday, February 4 at John Handley High School starting at 10:00 AM.
JAMES WOOD SENIOR WRESTLERS
Aaron Black (120 pound weight class) is the son of Pamela Simpson and Charles Black. Aaron has been on the varsity wrestling team all four years, earning four varsity letters. As a freshman, he was the Conference 21 West, Region 4A North, and VHSL 4A state champion in the 103 weight class. As a sophomore, he again won conference and regional titles and placed 2nd in the state, and as a junior, he won his third conference title, was third at regionals, and again won silver at states. He has a 3.8 GPA and earned Northwestern District all-academic honors all three years. His season record is currently 25-0 and he has a career record of 173-12 which is third on the James Wood all-time list. Aaron plans to attend a four-year college after graduation to study computer science.
Bailey Eichelberger (170 pound weight class) is the son of Wayne Eichelberger and Christa Davis. He is being escorted by Christa and John Davis. Bailey has been a member of the James Wood wrestling team for two years after transferring. His season record is currently 28-5 and he has a career record of 61-20 at Wood. Bailey plans to join the U.S. military after graduation.
Matt Papastavrou (152 pound weight class) is the son of Kirk and Fawn Papastavrou. Matthew has been a member of the wrestling program for four years and is a three-time varsity letter recipient. He is also a member of DECA, Leo Club, National Honor Society, and Varsity Club. His season record stands at 28-7 and he has a career record of 77-41. Matthew plans on attending a four-year university after graduation.
